Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: From Humble Beginnings to the President of India

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's life is a testament to the power of perseverance, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Born in a small village in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam's humble beginnings did not deter him from dreaming big. Despite facing financial challenges, he excelled in academics and graduated in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. Kalam's career in the Indian space and missile programs propelled India into the forefront of technological advancements.

Kalam earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology and in 1958, he joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In 1969, he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation, where he was the project director of the SLV-III, the first satellite launch vehicle that was both designed and produced in India.

Kalam played a leading role in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programs. Among his successes was Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile, which incorporated aspects of the SLV-III and was launched in 1989.

In 2002, Kalam was elected as the President of India and served till 2007. His journey from a humble background to the highest office in the country is a testament to his indomitable spirit, unwavering determination, and immense dedication³.

Kalam's life was not without challenges. He faced a major setback when he failed the Dehradun Air Force pilot interview. However, he did not let this failure deter him. Instead, he used it as a stepping stone to achieve greater things in life.

Kalam was also known for his kindness and empathy. Once, when there was a proposal to put broken glass on the walls of the DRDO for security reasons, Kalam objected to it, thinking about the birds that could get hurt. This incident shows his concern for other living beings.

Even after leaving office, he continued to inspire generations through his books, speeches, and interactions with students. Kalam's life teaches us that no dream is too big, and with hard work, determination, and integrity, anyone can achieve greatness and leave a lasting legacy.
